Start with the labelled storage condition

“Store in a refrigerator” is commonly associated with a +2 to +8 °C range, but the authorised product information and manufacturer instructions remain the source of truth. Do not place products in refrigerated storage merely because they are temperature-sensitive: some medicines require a different range, protection from light, or explicit protection from freezing.

Why dedicated refrigeration is preferred

A pharmacy refrigerator is designed for controlled storage and typically provides forced-air circulation, a digital controller, high- and low-temperature alarms and connection options for monitoring. A domestic refrigerator may have large gradients, cold spots near the evaporator and limited alarm or recording functions. It should not be assumed suitable without documented evidence that it meets the required range under real loading and operating conditions.

When comparing models, ask for temperature uniformity and stability data, alarm functions, recovery after door opening and the permissible ambient conditions. The displayed controller value alone does not prove that every storage position remains within range.

Monitoring, records and temperature mapping

Use a calibrated monitoring device positioned according to the pharmacy's procedure and risk assessment. A minimum/maximum thermometer may support routine checks, while a temperature data logger provides a continuous, time-stamped record. Define the recording interval, review frequency, alarm limits, responsible staff and the response to an excursion.

Glass or solid door?

  • Glass door: makes stock visible before opening and can reduce unnecessary door-open time. Check light-protection requirements for sensitive products.
  • Solid door: normally offers better insulation and blocks light, which can be useful in storage rooms or for light-sensitive stock.

The door type should be chosen together with workflow, access frequency and product labelling. A lock, self-closing mechanism or access-control policy may also be required by the facility.

Capacity and internal organisation

Size the chamber for the peak refrigerated stock plus working clearance around shelves and air outlets. Do not pack products tightly against the back wall or block circulation paths. Use defined zones, clear labels and a first-expiry-first-out process where required by the quality system.

Calculate usable capacity rather than cabinet litres alone. Include baskets, shelves, data-logger placement, quarantine space and the largest delivery expected between replenishment cycles.

Alarms and contingency planning

Useful alarms include high and low temperature, door open, power failure and sensor fault. For critical stock, consider remote notification and an independent logger. Prepare a written response plan covering staff contacts, product quarantine, excursion assessment and transfer to an approved backup unit.

Backup power can reduce risk, but it does not replace an alternative storage location or a documented transfer procedure. Record the refrigerator's temperature holdover under realistic loading and verify the plan periodically.
