A laboratory work zone may require protection of the sample, the operator, the environment, or all three. A laminar flow cabinet, a biological safety cabinet and a Class I safety cabinet are therefore not interchangeable: they serve different purposes and use different airflow patterns.

Choosing the correct cabinet type

• Class II biological safety cabinets help protect the operator, product and environment when handling biological aerosols. The catalogue includes Type A2 and Type B2 configurations.
• Laminar flow cabinets and clean workstations provide HEPA-filtered unidirectional airflow to protect the product or sample from particles, but they are not intended to protect the operator from hazardous aerosols.
• Class I laboratory safety cabinets contain contaminants within the work zone and protect the operator and environment, but do not protect the product.

Selection criteria

Selection begins with the risk assessment and laboratory protocol. The required protection function, working width, room dimensions, exhaust arrangement, external duct requirements, filtration, maintenance access and future configuration should then be considered.
