Raman spectrometers — selection and configuration

Raman spectrometers examine substances through inelastic light scattering. Applications include compound identification and the analysis of crystalline phases, polymers, minerals and thin films. Coupling the spectrometer to a microscope enables measurements at selected sample locations and chemical mapping.

Selection criteria

  • Laser wavelength and sample fluorescence.
  • Spectral coverage and resolution.
  • Confocal optics, motorised stages and autofocus.
  • Mapping, temperature cells or fibre probe requirements.

For a complementary approach to molecular vibrations, explore FTIR spectrometers. Raman system configurations depend on the samples and analytical method.

ModelKey differences
Renishaw inVia QontorConfocal system with LiveTrack; 200–2200 nm system optical range, lasers and detectors selected by configuration
HORIBA LabRAM Odyssey800 mm spectrometer; 200–2200 nm achromatic optics; open-space microscope and DuoScan
HORIBA LabRAM Soleil300–1600 nm achromatic optics; four-position grating turret; up to four integrated lasers

A system optical range does not mean one laser or detector covers it all. Low-frequency limits, fast mapping, QScan and coupling to other techniques depend on configuration.

Manufacturer information and documents

Check the version, supply region and document revision. A series page may describe options that are not included in the specific configuration.

Configuration, pricing and procurement

For a quotation, specify the required configuration, number of instruments, installation city and services needed. Agree options, consumables, commissioning and staff familiarisation separately. Documentation, delivery times and warranty terms are specified in the quotation and contract. See the model page for its current price or quotation request option.

Questions before selection and procurement

Which models are listed?

Renishaw inVia Qontor · HORIBA LabRAM Odyssey · HORIBA LabRAM Soleil.

How should the laser and accessories be selected?

Specify materials, fluorescence, sample dimensions and topography, and the required spatial and spectral resolution. Agree lasers, objectives, gratings, detectors, ULF filters, stage and software modules individually.

What should be specified in the supply package?

Photographs show manufacturer configurations. Cryostats, AFM/TERS, fibre probes, QScan, computer and specialist licences are not automatically included. For Odyssey the ULF cutoff is typically <10 cm⁻¹ at 532/633/785 nm; agree other conditions separately.

How can a fixed price be obtained?

Agree the exact equipment and option list, installation, training and service. A fixed price is established for a confirmed specification; each product page provides a quotation request.
