What is a -40°C blood plasma freezer
A low-temperature freezer set to -40°C is designed for long-term storage of Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), blood components, and biological samples. According to WHO recommendations and Ukraine's Ministry of Health, blood plasma is stored at temperatures not exceeding -25°C for 12 months, and at -30°C and below for up to 36 months. -40°C freezers provide additional temperature reserve for transport and fluctuations during freeze-thaw cycles.
Who needs a -40°C plasma freezer
- Blood centers and transfusion services — for storing FFP, cryoprecipitate, and special donor plasma
- Hospital blood banks — for operational reserve of blood components
- Laboratories and IVF clinics — for storing serum, bio-samples, and reproductive materials
- Blood product manufacturers — for raw material storage on fractionation lines
- Research institutions — for biobanking and long-term sample archives
How to choose a blood plasma freezer
- Chamber volume. From 100 L (small bank) to 700 L (blood center). A 250 ml FFP bag takes ~0.8 L with packaging.
- Cooling type. Single-stage — economical, holds down to -45°C. Cascade — more stable at -40…-50°C during door openings.
- Temperature logger. USB or GSM data logger — mandatory for audits and ProZorro. Supports WHO PQS validation.
- Backup power and alarms. Audio and SMS alerts on temperature deviation — standard for medical use.
Brands in our catalog
Plasma freezers from European manufacturers: Vestfrost Solutions (Denmark, BLF line), Snaige Medical (Lithuania), EMSAS (Turkey). All equipment certified as medical device with documentation for ProZorro and government tenders.
Delivery, installation, validation

FAQ
How does a -40°C freezer differ from a standard -25°C freezer for plasma?
A -40°C freezer provides temperature reserve: when the door opens or voltage fluctuates, the temperature varies within -30…-38°C, staying within normal range. A -25°C freezer easily crosses the -20°C threshold under the same conditions, shortening plasma shelf life. For long-term storage (12+ months), WHO recommends -30°C and below.
Can plasma and other blood components be stored in the same freezer?
Yes, FFP, cryoprecipitate, and antiplatelet plasma can be stored in -40°C freezers. Erythrocyte mass and platelet concentrate are NOT stored in such freezers — they require +2…+6°C and +20…+24°C respectively. Separate blood refrigerators and platelet incubators are needed.
Is a license from Ukraine's Ministry of Health required to purchase such a freezer?
No separate license is needed — the equipment is already certified as a medical device by the manufacturer. For ProZorro government tenders, we provide a full document package: certificate of conformity, registration application, technical passport, and manual.
What is the delivery time for a -40°C freezer?
From Kyiv stock — 1-3 business days. Custom orders from Europe — 2-4 weeks depending on model and manufacturer.
What warranty and service do you offer?
24-month warranty on compressor and unit. Service center in Kyiv with on-site team across Ukraine. Annual maintenance contracts, filter replacement, parameter checks, and validation.
Do you perform validation after installation?
Yes, cold chain validation is a separate service. We perform temperature mapping (8-16 measurement points), generate a WHO PQS-standard protocol, and issue audit documents. Details on the Validation page.
