−86°C ultra-low temperature freezers

This category contains 24 Vestfrost, Evermed and Antech freezers with usable capacities from 1 to 838 litres. Upright cabinets, chest freezers and portable models are available. Depending on the exact model, the operating range reaches −86 or −90°C, so the required set point must be confirmed in the specification of the selected unit.

For biobanks and research laboratories

Freezers in this class are used when a protocol requires ultra-low temperature storage: in biobanks, molecular biology and research laboratories, for DNA/RNA, cell cultures, reagents and other temperature-sensitive samples. The permitted temperature and storage period depend on the material and the method. Equipment should therefore be matched to a documented requirement, not selected only by its lowest temperature.

Portable models can support small sample batches and specialised workflows. Upright cabinets provide organised access for frequently handled inventory, while chest freezers can be practical for archive-style loading.

How to select a −86°C freezer

  • Operating range. Compare the target set point and room conditions with the specification of the exact model.
  • Capacity. Consider the format of cryoboxes, racks, shelves or inner compartments as well as the litre rating.
  • Sample access. Choose a layout that reduces search time and unnecessary door openings.
  • Monitoring and alarms. Define temperature logging, local and remote alerts and external monitoring requirements.
  • Backup plan. Establish the response to a power failure or planned service before placing critical samples in storage.
  • Installation. Check dimensions, doorways, ventilation, floor loading and the electrical supply.

How −60°C storage differs

If the approved method permits an operating range from −40 to −60°C, a dedicated −60°C freezer may be the closer fit. See the −60°C versus −86°C comparison, or return to all medical and laboratory freezers.

Preparing for operation

For accurate selection, provide the target temperature, sample type and quantity, storage format and monitoring specification. Refrigeration equipment qualification can also be planned when required.
